View Full Version : Started tryin to roll stoppies...
anyone else have a hard time tryin them? today was my first time ever on a big bike, i could only roll them for about 3-5 feet and then it would slam back down, i was doin them on my 636, the second time i rolled one the handle bars kinda started to shake(like a tank slapper) i thought i was gonna flip it, maybe its because i didnt lock my arms the first few times, fun as crap to do them though, i dont think i'm doin them right but i'll see if i can get some footage of me to see what i'm doing wrong...
oh yeah and i get home and drop the bike in the grass like a squid! :gay: the bike kinda got some small scratches on the motor...

rolling stoppies
i was trying to perfect them yesterday, u gotta prep the front breaks then shift your weight to bounce the ass end of the bike up to a rolling B/P, then just ride that break as smooth as u can,
very hard to explain typing but just practice practice practice and you will be sweet..
post up a vid or some pics
i'll see if i can get some footage might not have sound...if anything i'll at least get some pics up soon....

yeah i'm thinkin if i'm gonna keep tryin this then i might as well put a cage on it...i'm comin in at about 35-40 mph and bounce my butt and then pull in the brakes, the upper part of my legs are sooo sore, yeah so i guess cage and damper are on my to buy list now....headshake is pretty scary huh

It's easier if you don't bounce your ass. Basically as your cracking that front brake, you need to have your weight positioned right. Once you hit the brake, your basically gonna hump your gas tank, and it throws a little more weight forward. It's a lot easier. I used to bounce my ass too, but then my friend showed me the hump technique with the tank, and it was A LOT easier. Best of luck man.
yep, i've noticed that, it felt like when you bounced your butt on the seat it didnt really help much, i guess thats why my legs are kinda sore lol i've been humping my tank hahaha

im just learnin them now too but i roll in at like 40ish and compress the front end THEN hump the tank and just roll it.... at first i used to just bang the brake and try to ride it... like a fiddy, makin sure i had the front end compressed first helped me a lot

i used to try to bounce it up but z's right the faster you go the easier it comes up i start at about 60. no pro but i roll em 15-20 feet! just slide forward on the seat and don't bounce it'll throw you off more than it'll help.

First things first...GET A DAMPER. I know that bike shakes bad at height bro! if u disregaurd the 1st thing i said then hit it with some speed (around 20-30mph) and practice ur brake control. Get the tail to the same height everytime u grab the brake, then work ur way up . Dont go for broke right away . Lock ur arms and get ur weight over the tank, practice keeping the tail in line. Remember to counter steer (push on the right bar to go left, left to go right) BABY STEPS HOMIE... THIS IS THE MOST DIFFICULT TRICK TO MASTER ON A BIKE. IF U FUCK UP, UR GET'N HIT WITH A 400LB BIKE TO THE BACK OF UR HEAD. :( GOOD LUCK BETO

Why does everyone always say not to look down? I look down and can hit 50-60 feet usually everytime....I can't force myself to look up instead of at the asphalt

You guys ever watch Teach do stoppies? Sometimes he looks straight, sometimes he's lookin straight down at the ground.

You guys ever watch Teach do stoppies? Sometimes he looks straight, sometimes he's lookin straight down at the ground.
Teach Rocks some decent ones...Definitely look where you want to go though. It applies with everything...snowboarding, skating, kneedraggin etc.. Look straight ahead. I started doing it and bam, added at least 10 ft. to my stoppies consistantly. I know 10 ft. aint that much, but it helps a lot, and makes it easier to improve other aspects of your technique.
get a damper. dont even think about doin another stoppie until you get one. that shit is not worth it. after you have aquired one then start at about 30-40. accelerate to about 40 then as soon as you roll off the throttle grab the brake to bring the ass up. some people like to come out of the seat as the roll off the throttle and onto the brake, i like to keep my ass in seat and push down the pegs but you will figure out whats more comfortable for you. to go distance you need to know how to steer thats the hard part. controling the hieght is more of a mind game and finess.
back to steering, now when yougo to pick the ass end up its probably either going to go out to the right or the left, but 9 times out of 10 if when you pick it goes right its gonna keep coming up to the right because somethin in the way to shift your weight to bring the ass up is makin it go right, because if your position is correct it will come up straight. so if your ass (the tail of the bike) is goin to the right the every time you pick up the stoppie push on the right clip on like you are dippin in to a right turn. keep doin that until the ass starts goin left, then just play with it and repeat, after repeating enough times youll just start steering it straight, after you got that then come in as fast as your comfortable and take it as high as you want for as far as you desire
oh and make sure you have as dope tire(i like the new pilot) and i like to run between 20-22lbs in the front tire.
let me konw how that works out for you

theres all different styles of stoppies, some people look forward, down at the bike whatever, the most important thing is to find the one that makes you feel the most comfortable because it is goin to feel uncomfortable no matter what the first few times tryin to roll them. once you find your style stick with it, the key to this shit is repitition.

Yo, really good advice, Merk... You definitely stated that shit in a way that makes sense to me... Also... What about front end setup on an F4i...I just got one...
http://stuntarmy.com/images/June26/NewF4i2.jpg
put a 929 front end on it, i rolled some nice stoppies on my stock f4i front end but the design of the front end is goin to make the bike always want to slap, also if you look at your front end...imagine goin over a bump in a stoppie, the front wheel dosent move, the bike will take the bump like a fuckin pogo stick, then look at the 929 front end, the wheel will move not the whole bike, makin it smoother and more realistic to keep the bike at bp. you can do stoppies on a f4i front end, the farthest i rolled on the f4i with the stock front end was 435 with a 300 foot approach, but the whole time the bike wanted to slap, then it did, i crashed it sucked, could have been worse, but wrecking a stoppie is goin to happen eventually , but the f4i front end will make your chances greater for sure.
on any front end you have screws that you can adjust your forks with on the top and the bottom. mr brown told me to tighten them all the way then back off a 1/4 turn, and it sure as shit made the bike come up quicker and feel smoother in the stoppie.
and a good front tire, i like the pilot sport with about 20-22lbs
wear a helmet, and respect the trick nah mean

Its definetly a control trick, there is no room for mistakes like Rowdy said.
Take your time, its comes with repetition. Get comfortable gettin the back end high. When I first learned to roll and "good endo" not a 60mph 30 footer.
I would come in @ 20mph and hit the brakes and get the bike as high as I could without flippin, each time a little harder on the brakes until I felt the balance point. then once you get a feel for how high the bike has to be to roll a endo out, you can increase the speed a little and go for some more distance. Just be careful, go gradually(Baby steps). Keep your shoulders square, arms stiff not locked, ass off the seat 4-6 inches. Look to where you want to go.
Holler back, jhope that helps alittle.

This is the best advice so far. (not that the rest of it wasn't good). I've got some wicked digs in my helmet from going over the front. Hate to think what would have happened if I wasn't wearing it.
word, the stoppies are on hold until i get a damper, actually all tricks are on hold until i can afford a damper....yo Woo i'm diggin the new color on the F4i, even though the yellow was distinguished, the silver color makes it stand out ALOT more, if my 636 was paid off i think i actually would trade you lol
oh yeah forgot to say, thanks to all for the advice, hopefully alot of other riders learnin stoppies read this, GREAT advice by Merk and Rowdy!
