sprocket ..... which side is out

ok sounds like a stupid question.. i have a sprocket that is flush on one side and resested on the other .. i was told that the side that is resested is the outside does it matter.... who can tell me

the bolt and washer if you have one i did on my r6 but not on my gsxr will sit in that resessed part....i think
