I had an SV about 3 years ago I posished the frame on. Did it all by hand and tried dooing a real good job on. That thing took me about 80 hours to do. Total pain in the ass. Start with rough sandpaper and then work you way down to finer and finer grit. 600, then 800, 1000, 1500, 2000. Maybe even rougher to start if the aluminum is really rough or you're trying to get through the coating. I hear Oven cleaner works well to get the coating off too. Make sure you wet sand with the finer grit papers. The more time you take, the better the result. Make sure you get all the scratches out from the previous grit paper before moveing on to the next grit. I will never do anything like that again. Easier to tear the bike down and have the frame chromed.
Here's a pic of my handywork.

i did a set of rims a looooonnng time ago (had no finger prints for weeks lol)
best hint i came up with ......as one of the final steps i used the finest grit steel wool i could find and wet it........then i dipped it in mothers polishing compound (never use mothers to clkean final polish work scratches the shit out of it!) and basically wet sanded like that

this is what you do, go to big lots, or target, walmart what ever, get some heavy duty oven cleaner, spray that shit on the anidizing and that shit will come right off, wait till it turns black and wipe it off with a sos pad, then you can start sanding with four hundred, then go 600.800.1000.1500.2000 and then 2500, and hit it with a buffer and mothers at the end, and bling, bling, make sure you always sand in the same direction, and get the scratches, from the previous grit out, befor you progress to the next grit. check out
www.havehomes.com/jaredsparts.com and you can see some shit i did. it only takes a night for a frame, if I start at 8pm I'll be done by 8am, no problem. so try this it works, that swingarm took me four hours to do, thats it., and the gixxer I did it all at one time, took three nights.
