This was posted on another forum to give a general understanding of the DML petition, and to response to the replies that were made "for" the DML and "against" the DML.
Hi Everyone,
It’s good to see all of you responses – opposing the DML and supporting the DML. It will truly help in the finalization of the vote. Remember, this is just a discussion about a petition for a DML. It is not a final discussion to approve the implementation of a DML. A petition is the first step towards a DML and will be the most current number of people who are in favor of a DML.
I agree and most assuredly will have all the necessary statistics to accompany the DML documents for the powers to be to decide if this would be a valid project to consider. Once the project is taken into consideration, then, and only then will any and all ways in which a DML can be created be analyzed to determine the best all around way to implement the DML, including cost.
My example was just that – an example to put the thinking process in motion, not to dwell as if it was the only way. Many of the people who would be in favor of the DML petition may not be after reviewing the end result. And, many people who were against the DML petition may than favor the DML after reviewing the final plan.
The petition’s main objective is to get signatures. To do this, there has to be some informative explanation of the “why it is a good idea”, which the petition does explain.
Some years back, I have witnessed a great marketing campaign. A hand soap company went into certain areas and hung their bars of hand soap on the door knobs of the houses. As people came home, some looked at the hand soap and said wow, and starting to use in immediately. Others looked at the hand soap and said, let’s wait and see if the hand soap actually gets our hands clean and it won’t give us any type of rash, etc. Than you had the rest of the people who came home and saw the hand soap hanging on their door and just took it off and threw it on their counter, like is was no big deal.
The campaign proved that there were three common ways in which people viewed being involved. The first set of people who used the hand soap immediately and found that it really works and there were no after effects, enticed the people who were waiting to see if the results were positive, and if they were, would than decide to jumped in on the ban wagon. Those two groups than enticed the third group of people who didn’t care at the time to become curious about the commotion, and enticed them to look into the matter, which made them involved to made a decision on the issue.
The moral of that story is; not everyone will agree with a given subject, project or a way of doing things right off the bat. Some people make a decision quickly, some need more time, and then, you have some that need much notice to be involved.
When I asked the question; “putting aside the pro’s and con’s – if a DML was present tomorrow – would you use it? That question was just a simple way of determining if a DML would be used by all who were debating the issues. The signing of the petition does not obligate anyone in any way. It is just a statement saying that you would favor a DML.
When the DML is presented to be considered for implementation, without question, all the facts and figures will be there.
I read everyone’s comments, and again, I appreciate all of them. Another way to explain a DML is; all motorcycles using our roadways are intertwined with traffic, and will be, no matter if a DML was present or not. However, we can make the use of motorcycles on our roadways safer with a DML.
Putting aside any form of statistics, if a DML was present to use, it would put most (if not all) motorcycles in that lane, wherever the DML may be placed on the roadway. A separate lane, whether it was a full lane or a lane (space) sufficient to better the flow (usage, space between 4-wheelers on any side) of motorcycles to pass through traffic than the “now space” that is there to use legally or illegally. Remember, there is no dedicated space whatsoever for motorcycles, it is a “ride at your own risk.” A DML will give motorcycles a more secure way of using the roadways.
The petition will also get many people thinking. People who now own motorcycles, people who were or are thinking of purchasing a motorcycle and people who never thought of having a motorcycle to rethink the possibility of using a motorcycle more often for their commute to work, the store, fun etc.
A petition is also to create peoples outlook on the subject (which it has) to impute their thoughts (good or bad), which will help refine all aspects of the subject, in this case a DML.
In close, don’t get your feathers in an uproar by being greatly methodical in deciphering the idea of a DML. Simply ask yourself if all things were within your way of reasoning – do you think a DML is a good idea and if so, would you like to see a DML on our roadways?
Most Sincerely and Cordially,
Shear’Ree
