Tagging anyone?

Anyone? I just use stencils now, no more freehand shit. Now it comes out lookking like art instead of scribbling.

I find a cool picture I like, then I hit photoshop. Desaturate, turn the contrast up to 90%, resize to 16 by 14 inches. I print it out on paper first, then trace it onto mylar. I make a special cardboard frame to hold the stencil, and a big cardboard folder to put it in when its wet with paint.

Find a picture you like, the less color the better. Open it up in photoshop then desaturate it (make it black n white). Then you increase the contrast untill all the grey turns black or white. Then you resize it as big as you want, and print it out. Then you tape your image face down on a sheet of mylar (rigid clear plastic) and turn it over. Take an X-acto knife and cut out where ever theres black. This will leave you with the stencil, which is a negative of your image.

Then in the middle of the night you roll up all dressed in black and hide in the bushes near your target. When theres no cars coming you jump out and look left, look right, bomb.

The best way Ive found is to get clear mylar sheet, and tape the printout to it face down. Then just flip it over and trace the edges of the black areas with an exacto knife. The only thing you need to worry about is if theres an island of white, you need to make a bridge to it.

Hmmm havent been out in like over a year...well I actually did some free hand for a school project senior year (last year). Man around where I live my shit would get painted over in a day...sucked. I like freehand just more skill involved so I guess I appreciate it more when it comes out lookin like art instead of just ppl throwin their name out there.

Just my personal experience. I was stuck at RIT without a car. No girls, and too snowy to ride my bicycle to anywhere to find some. I went almost a whole year without touching a female. And to add to it, the weather is so depressing all the time. I bet its lightly snowing there right now, just enough so you cant ride.

Like i said before....I like freehand better, more skill involved. But then again everyone has a different. When I was still into it i was gonna start doin my signature with a stencil but keep my pieces free hand.

When I do freehand shit, its more fun to paint, but the piece doesnt have the same artistic affect to viewers. People walk by and they see I wrote my name creatively, to them its garbage. It took hard work to do it, and 99% of the people who see it are disgusted by it. Only other writers will understand it. Its ugly to them, in fact its not too attractive to me either. I wouldnt want a tag on my house. But a picture is worth a thousand words, and it really is. To me a stencil has so much more to offer artisticly. You can convey a message other than "I was here" and viewers can actually appreciate it. It looks like art, rather than chicken scratches, and to the public, that makes a difference in how they view it.

Whith stenciling, all the skill and most of the hard work is in making the stencil. Much like freehand, you can do a 5 minute job, or a 5 hour job. You still have to go out there and paint it and you run an even higher risk of getting caught since you have to make multiple trips to the site, and carry a delicate and sometimes large stencil.

I understand what you guys are feeling, cuz thats how I used to feel about it. I like stenciling more cuz theres so much more to it.

i'm not hating either, i've been out of that scene for YEARS. i do agree tho. freehand writing did weed out the toys from the real writers. but noone used stencils so it wasnt an option. if you didnt have style and werent fast, you werent in a top crew. couldnt take your time in the trainyards(cops) and the piece aspect of a battle we had a time limit so there was no room for error

For curved surfaces...I dont really know, it would have to be something flexible, yet cuttable with an Xacto.

For flats I use thick cardboard for most of it, and thin mylar for the fine details. You could probably use mylar on a bike, if you sprayed on some adhesive to the back of it

Yea Im lookin into gettin an airbrush and compressor and try a whack at it. I forget what they use, its like frisket or sum shit, its lighty adhesive on one side and is very thin, semi transparent paper. that and thin artist tape is all airbrushers use that I know of.
