found some info on this. This actually wasn't him being stupid:
It was at the Isle of Man in 2003. The rider is Richard Quayle and he was riding in the Formula 1 race at the time. The cause of the crash was that he caught his left shoulder on the rock face on the left side of the road while going around the left hander just after Ballacraine. This caused him to be pulled back on the bike losing control and consequently going wide right and hitting the right side stone wall. Supprisingly enough. he lived through it and will be one of the rider liasons for the race this year, although he no longer races.
