View Full Version : Reinforcing r6 subframes...

Alright, I just destroyed my 2nd one and my 1st was definately my fault for smacking the holy shit out of it, but this 2nd one cracked right between both subframe bolts from 1 light hit, and then totally broke from 2 more hits. They wern't incredibly hard, i've seen my friends hit theirs just as hard with no problems. This is on a 03 r6 and I was just wondering if anyone has went through this/has any suggestions to stop me from blowing $150 everytime I accidently let it fall back on the bar.

Do you have any pictures of it? I'm a good friend with a guy that owns a fab shop. He does awesome work, and specializes in welding aluminum. I can tell him it's for me and do it for cheap or trade something. I do machine work for him when he does some welding for me sometimes. If you could send me some pictures I'll talk to him about it.

The new R6 subframes are so weak I doubt theres anything you can really do short of making an all steel subframe

I was sortof thinking of that too... I mean... the r6's frame looks plenty strong where it mounts up, no real tabs... if someone could weld an all steel subframe the shit would be gangsta. I fucking love this bike... but this subframe is killing me. Today I was actually creeping some wheelies... then I accidently come back on it 2 times and i'm done practicing for the day (it broke by the gas tank as well... I couldnt even sit on the bike really, lol). FUCK.

I've seen people brake the r6 subframe in half with there hands. Had a friend that had an 03. He scraped the stock tail soft as could be. Tail barely had a mark on it and it cracked the subframe clean off

My boy could make you a new one out of some good aluminum. That cast aluminum that Yamaha uses sucks. Or he can make one out of steel if you'd like. We would need one of your old sub frame to go off of though. I'm sure I could get someone from around here to let me use their R6 to check the fit before we sent it back. I know this guy can do this. He use to build monster truck chassis and race them professionally with the big boys like Bigfoot, and Grave Digger.

Well my old ones are all broke up and stuff right near the mounts. So I don't think they would be of much use. If you hit me up at 1-931-224-2040 maybe we can talk about it more.

i would think if you make a STRONGER subframe, yoru making what it attaches to, weaker. i would re-enforce the existing one with some AL tubing somewhere,

i dont think any good welder (unless he's a friend) will make you a subfarme for $150. honestly, ive been machining and TIg welding for a year, an di would charge liek $400 to make somehting of that nature, its a lot of labor if you want all teh angles to come out right. i would re-weld yours for like $40 i fyou sent it to me, just to do you the favor. i would liek seeing a broken one in person to see what i coudl devise as re-enforcement

Well... I got an old one thats totally shitted out (broke 7 or so places and ripped pieces off) I can take pics of to show you. My current one just got a lot of holes drilled in it and is held by about 50 some odd zipties, so there is no real hope for fixing it.

Sorry it took a couple of days to get back. I talked to my guy and he said that he probably could reinforce your subframe for 150. But it would cost more if he was to build you a new one.
